Hello everyone, as promised here is my tutorial on French Milled Apple Soap. I finally feel well enough to sit at the computer a bit and I am dying to show you guys how easy this is. I have never made soap, or remilled soap before, and this turned out perfectly the first time. I don’t have any fancy soap making supplies, so I worked up my own recipe, I hope you all enjoy it. This recipe will yield 11 cupcake sized bars of apple scented soap that smell absolutely delicious.
Milled Twice Apple Soap
I started by grading three 3.5 ounce bars of Cocoa Butter soap. The bars were naturally scented, but had no fragrance additives. I used the fine area on my cheese grader to get smaller soap curds. I put the soap curds into a heat safe glass bowl.
I placed a pan of water on the stove and brought it to a boil. I added 11 ounces of a 13.5 ounce can of coconut milk to my soap curds to hydrate them. I’ve heard that you can let this mixture sit over night, but I didn’t find that necessary. I let the curds re-hydrate while the water was warming up.
I placed the whole bowl into the pan of boiling water, simulating a double boiler. I did say I didn’t have any fancy soap making supplies
I stirred the soap curds and smashed them on the side of the bowl with a fork. I found the fork method much easier than the whisk method which only served to help me make a mess.
When the soap curds were melted and began to leave a ring at the top of the bowl(I think that is called “trace”) I added 8ml of apple fragrance oil. ( I used a spare infant medicine dropper) I mixed for approximately two minutes because I wanted to make sure that the fragrance oil mixed in well.
I turned off the burner and added 3/4 of a cup of granulated sugar to my mixture. I wanted an ex-foliating soap that was also a great moisturizer.
I spooned the liquid soap into some old muffin tins and sprinkled them with Cinnamon. I set the soap on the counter to cool. Within two hours I could remove the soap from the makeshift molds. I let the soap sit for two additional days and then tried them out.
I have to tell you I am in love with the soap. The bars lather nicely, and ex-foliate as you wash. Unlike other soaps I don’t feel any residue left behind on my skin, only the fresh smell of apples. (Clif likes it too.)
I know what you’re thinking, and I swear that’s really all I did. No fancy scales, no messing around with Lye (although I will latter) just an easy afternoon chemistry lesson in the kitchen that produced soap that smells so good the younger kids thought you could eat it.
Heres the cost of my soap making supplies:
4 bars of Cocoa Butter soap -$1.75
1 ounce of apple fragrance oil-$1.69
1 can of Coconut milk-$0.79
Total is $4.23 or $0.38 cents per bar. I have enough fragrance oil to make a second batch and I still have one bar of cocoa butter soap saved back for a batch of Cherry soap. I hope this recipe is easy to follow and that it inspires you to make your own apple scented soap! Happy crafting!
